Appointment of New National Welfare Officer
Having been sponsored whilst at University by the Royal Navy, Heather joined the Wrens on graduation with a degree in Applied Science. During these student days she served in the Royal Naval Reserve as a Radio Operator although in those days women did not serve at sea. She then served as a Logistics Officer in the ‘stone frigates’ (Daedalus and Gannet) and, after volunteering for sea service, served twice onboard the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible and the Type 23 frigate HMS Sutherland. She held training appointments at both HMS Raleigh and Britannia Royal Naval College and led the officer recruiting team at HMS Caledonia in Rosyth. Highlights of her time at sea were two six-month deployments to the Adriatic in Invincible and a seven-month deployment to the South Atlantic whilst on board Sutherland. Ambition to work with veterans’ charitiesOn leaving the Service Heather was determined to work within the charity sector and joined the Tourette Syndrome Association as Director of Business Development. However, her ambition was to work for a veterans’ charity and so she was delighted when appointed as the General Secretary of the Royal British Legion Scotland in 2005. She then decided to broaden her experience of working within the veterans’ charity sector and so she is thrilled to have joined BLESMA as National Welfare Officer. She says ‘I am looking forward to meeting Members and am honoured to be part of the BLESMA team. I have lived in Edinburgh for the last two years but will now make my home in Essex. Whilst I lived in the south west of England during my time in the Navy, I have not lived in the south east and I’m looking forward to exploring this corner of the country and, hopefully, to enjoying some warmer weather!’ We welcome Heather but can not guarantee the weather.
