Member Kieran Wood is part of a team that has constructed a wooden helicopter at a scheme that helps veterans and their families through practical projects. Kieran, who served with the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, is a regular at Dig In in Preston, and was at the centre of the helicopter project which took three months to complete.
“It is fantastic to go there every week and work with other veterans – I really enjoy going,” said Kieran, who suffered life-changing brain injuries in a car crash when he was 18 years old. Kieran, now 37, is an Invictus Games gold medallist and Highland Games
competitor. He was in a coma for a month after the accident and had to battle for months to learn to walk again. He now attends Dig In with a support worker.
“Dig In is a fantastic place for military veterans and Kieran really loves it there,” says his wife, Claire. “It was great to see the helicopter develop, and when it was finished family members were invited and there was a celebration with the team. “Dig In is an inspirational place where they teach new skills and get veterans working together, which gives a real sense of purpose. They help each other, but everyone works at their own pace.”
