Their Story
Ed Davis was born in Hereford, England, and educated at Coleraine Academical Institution, Northern Ireland.
He is currently the Strategic Director for Capewell Europe Limited and Gibraltar Chair of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.
He served for 35 years in the Naval Service as a Royal Marines Officer. Retiring from the UK Armed Forces in the rank of Lieutenant General, he transferred to the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office and was appointed, by Her Majesty The Queen, as the 67th Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar in January 2016. He completed his tenure as Gibraltar’s Governor in February 2020.
Prior to that he spent his early years in the Naval Service at regimental duty in the United Kingdom, the Falkland Islands, Cyprus, Norway and Belize. He commanded a Specialist Military Unit from 2002-2004, this included Operation TELIC 1 in Iraq, and subsequently commanded 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines from 2010-2011 during which he deployed to Afghanistan as Commander Task Force Helmand on Operation HERRICK 14. He was appointed the 63rd Commandant General Royal Marines and Commander United Kingdom Amphibious Forces in December 2011. His last Naval Service appointment was as the Deputy Commander of NATO Land Command Headquarters in Izmir, Turkey, from July 2014 to January 2016.
He is Representative Colonel Commandant of the Royal Marines, Chair of Blesma (The Limbless Veterans), Vice President of the Naval Children’s Charity, Trustee of the White Ensign Association Charity, Ambassador for the Bowra Foundation Charity, Freeman of the City of London, and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers.
He was appointed MBE in 1996, OBE in 2005, an officer in the United States Legion of Merit in 2011, CBE in 2012, CB in 2014 and KStJ in 2016.
